Queen’s Birthday honours

The importance of emergency medicine and research were highlighted in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, which has recognised the outstanding contributions of clinician-researchers.
Professor Julia Crilly was honoured, receiving an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her service to emergency care nursing.
Julia is a Professor of Emergency Care, a respected researcher, educator and mentor. Her research focuses on innovative emergency care service delivery for vulnerable people as well as improving the working environment for the emergency department staff who provide that care.
Speaking to the ABC Gold Coast, Julia described the significance of the award: “I’m certainly honoured and very excited to be receiving this award, especially given this year is the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.”
Julia was appointed conjoint Professor of Emergency Care with the Gold Coast Hospital and Griffith University in 2014, a role that supports her commitment to answering clinical questions through high quality research.
“This position really allows me to bring experts from the clinical and academic setting to answer important questions, that at the end of the day, aim to improve care delivery for people requiring emergency care,” she said.
During her research career to date Julia has published more than 100 peer-review publications and attracted over $6 million dollars in research funding, including over $1.25 million in EMF grants.
In addition to her own research pursuits, Julia has been instrumental in leading research growth within the Gold Coast Health Emergency Department and is a driving force behind research projects that enable clinicians and students to be mentored.
Another major contributor to medical research and one of the country’s foremost experts in paediatric health, Professor Sheena Reilly was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Sheena was recognised for her service to tertiary education, medical research, and paediatric speech pathology.
With research contributions spanning more than 30 years, Sheena is Griffith’s Pro Vice Chancellor (Health), and an Honorary Fellow with the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. She has generously shared her substantial skill and expertise with the EMF, most recently in the area of research governance.
