Research Committee

Dr Spiller is a vastly experienced emergency medicine specialist and clinical researcher. Currently, he is the Director of the Emergency Department at The Prince Charles Hospital. Dr Spiller has also worked in emergency departments at Logan Hospital, Greenslopes Private Hospital, University Hospital (Reykjavik, Iceland), Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the former Mater Children’s Hospital. Prior to specialising in Emergency Medicine, he worked as a General Practitioner, before which he was a Medical Officer (Officer in Charge) with the Royal Australian Navy.

A/Prof Furyk is an Emergency Physician at University Hospital Geelong, Victoria, an Adjunct Associate Professor at James Cook University and an Affiliate Associate Professor at Deakin University. A/Prof Furyk is involved in collaborative research both within Queensland and other states in both adult and pediatric emergency research. He served as an EMF Board Director from 2018 to 2020 and re-joined EMF as a member of the Research Committee

Professor Grantham is Adjunct Professor at Curtin University and a senior medical officer at the Flinders Medical Centre emergency department and the South Australian Ambulance Service. He brings his expertise from leading Australian Medical Assistance Teams and as a Bellberry Human Research Ethics Committee member. Prof. Grantham the Chair of the EMF Board and serves as the Board representative on the Research Committee.

A/Prof James Hughes has almost 20 years of academic and clinical experience in emergency nursing. He currently holds a position as Associate Professor and Discipline Lead (Nursing) at the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work at The University of Queenslandand and is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Having worked as a clinician and researcher in some of Australia’s busiest emergency departments, A/Prof Hughes is particularly interested in acute pain care, patient flow, and workload management in the Emergency Department.

A/Prof Neil is a health economist who has worked in academia, government and as a consultant for industry. She currently holds a position as Select Foundation Senior Research Fellow, Menzies Institute for Medical Research, UTAS. Since joining Menzies, Dr Neil has established a research program focussed on health services and systems, and mental health across the life course, and in 2019, the Menzies’ Mental Health and Wellbeing Research Group. Since 2015 she has had 50 published manuscripts and has been on grants that have received over $7 million.

Dr Nguyen Vu is EMF’s General Manager and Research Manager. In her capacity as Research Manager, she is responsible for EMF’s research grants programs. She has extensive experience in university research and research management in Germany, USA, Switzerland and Australia. Prior to joining EMF, Dr Nguyen Vu worked in research management and administration at Griffith University and prior to that, the University of Queensland. She completed her PhD at the University of Zurich.

Tim Cudmore is a consumer representative, consultant, and advocate with experience across healthcare, research, and clinical networks in Queensland. He serves as the Queensland Clinical Network Executive Consumer and provides strategic consumer leadership across advisory and governance committees. Living with a traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury for over 25 years, Tim brings both professional expertise and lived experience to his work. He is actively involved in research as a consumer reviewer and collaborator, supporting projects to strengthen consumer engagement and ensure research remains grounded in real-world impact. He is a strong advocate for meaningful consumer involvement in healthcare design, delivery, and research.

Professor Yates is Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health at Queensland University of Technology and a Co-Director for QUT’s Centre for Healthcare Transformation. She is also Lead Researcher for the Cancer Nursing Professorial Precinct at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Director for Queensland Health’s state-wide Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education. Professor Yates leads a large competitively funded research program focused on developing workforce capacity in cancer, palliative and aged care, advancing the management of cancer related symptoms and treatment side effects, and strengthening the nexus between research, policy and practice in cancer, palliative, and aged care.
