EMF’s Research Evaluation Panel (REP) is a cornerstone of our research governance. The REP is a panel of expert reviewers who provide independent, rigorous peer review of grant applications. REP members play a vital role in shaping emergency medicine research by evaluating proposals for scientific rigour, methodological strength, relevance to EMF’s mission, and potential impact on patient care. This ensures funding is awarded to high-quality research that has the potential to improve emergency health outcomes.
What do REP members do
- Review grant applications across different grant schemes
- Assess applications against clear review criteria including scientific quality, importance to emergency care, team capability, value for money and translation into practice.
- Provide constructive, developmental feedback to applicants
- Score applications and make funding recommendations
- Participate in a panel meeting to discuss applications and agree on final rankings and funding recommendations
Each application is typically reviewed by three experts to ensure balanced and rigorous assessment. Health economics components are reviewed by a dedicated panel where relevant.
Time Commitment
For each grant round, REP members are asked to:
- Complete written assessments
- Review applicant responses and score grant applications
- Attend an online panel meeting.
EMF’s Research Management Team provides full administrative and secretariat support.

- Emergency clinician-researchers

Experience in peer review or grant assessment is valued but not essential.
