Funding Extension for EMF

24 March 2025

We are excited to announce that the Queensland Government will continue its vital support for EMF through Queensland Health by renewing funding for a further three years.

This continued partnership highlights the importance of EMF’s role in advancing emergency medicine research and improving healthcare outcomes across Queensland.

The Hon Timothy Nicholls, Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, made this announcement during his opening speech at EMF’s Grants Award Ceremony:

“I am pleased to announce that a further funding arrangement for $6.3 million over the next three years to confirm EMF’s ongoing research and grants programs. I am very pleased to be able to confirm this, because we need research to arm us with the information we need to make the decisions for the future.“

It was an honour to have Minister Nicholls and Dr David Rosengren, Director-General of Queensland Health, join us to celebrate EMF’s ongoing contributions to the field.

EMF Board Chair, Hugh Grantham ASM emphasised the significance of clinician-led research,

“Frontline clinicians are best placed to drive change in emergency healthcare. It’s fantastic to have Health Minister Tim Nicholls with us today, reaffirming this approach, and to acknowledge Dr David Rosengren, whose leadership highlights the vital role of emergency medicine in shaping our healthcare system.“

Since 2007, Queensland Health’s commitment to EMF has been instrumental in supporting innovative research led by clinicians in emergency departments.

To date, EMF has awarded over $24 million across 293 grants, driving research that enhances diagnostic tools, treatment methods, ultimately improving patient care.

Minister Nicholls also acknowledged EMF’s impact on shaping healthcare policy:

“EMF’s work, particularly the large-scale research project on patient flow that was undertaken, informed some of the decisions and policies that we took to the election, and will help inform us and drive the change we need to make.“

By fostering Queensland’s growing network of clinician-researchers, EMF empowers healthcare professionals to address pressing healthcare challenges, ensuring long-term improvements in emergency care.

With Queensland Health’s continued support, EMF remains dedicated to research excellence, innovation, and delivering tangible healthcare improvements for Queenslanders.

Minister Nicholls closed his speech with a heartfelt message:

“To all of you who make a contribution, to all of those who do the research, thank you very much and your work is not unnoticed.“
